Newt beginnings! Housebuilder teams up with local primary school to welcome wild

Leading housebuilder, Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, has continued to support local wildlife in Barnsley by installing two ponds for a congress of newts that have made themselves at home at the housebuilder’s Lock Keeper’s Gate development in Low Barugh.

The five star housebuilder installed the two ponds, as well as newt friendly habitat around its site, to ensure the species were as comfortable as possible in their exciting, new home. To encourage the local community to protect wildlife in the area, Barratt Homes invited a class from Darton Primary School to get hands on with the newts with ecology experts, Sophie Olejnik and Emily Moore from BSG Ecology. The pupils learnt all about the species and were even able to do a spot of pond dipping to get up close and personal with other pond-dwelling creatures.

Axel Keoghan, Sales Adviser at Lock Keeper’s Gate said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the amphibian residents to Lock Keeper’s Gate! We’re dedicated to preserving and encouraging wildlife in the areas in which we build, so it was great to have Darton Primary School on site to learn about wildlife and ways that they can make their own gardens more wildlife friendly!”

Kathryn Talbot, Teacher from Darton Primary School stated: “We’re really grateful that Barratt Homes invited us to Lock Keeper’s Gate so that the children could learn all about the wildlife that have moved into Barnsley! The children loved being able to see the newts in their natural environment, and being able to hold them was a real experience!”
